REFLECTION

As a student in architecture, it is crucial to apperceive the rules and conditions in the process of construction. Through the learning of construction-related knowledge in S1-2020, I stepped inside the world of 'alchemy' of how incredible designs can actually come to alive.

The first assignment I have done is to design a single-skin brick wall within the existing site. Despite being the designer, it is more important to analyse the composition of bricks and how this would impact on the load transfer within the whole brick wall, to ensure the constructability and the stability after the project is constructed.

Then, the most weighted assignment in this subject, Timber Deck. I was informed of the joist-bearer system of timber deck, we need to choose our own size of bearers and joists. and layout them according to their span and spacing, in order to reach the optimal efficiency in the whole structure.

Last but not least, is the seat design. In this assignment I explored many different materials and analysed their properties in terms of their different strength and flexibility, also considered how people would feel when contacting with the seat surface, and the ability to transfer different parts of the design into the site.

Environmental factor such as moisture is always considered throughout these three assignments. This is demonstrated in the detail treatments including the cutting bricks on sill, the edge details of the timber deck, and the choice of material in the seat design.
